A Word From The WOR RE On WOR Endurance Racing

To begin, I'd like to say thank you to those that participated with WOR's first endurance race back in October 2010, and also to the racers and teams that provided valuable feedback via our endurance racing survey over the holiday season in 2010-2011. By now it is widely known that WOR has made the decision to feature sprint racing for our 46th annual WOR Games, held over 20-22 May 2011. The move back to a traditional WOR Games format, was prompted by feedback from our members, and the needs of our region and division. However, WOR has not lost the fire to bring SCCA sanctioned endurance racing back to Mid Ohio, and cast men and machine into a grueling contest that brings both drama and spectacle to spectator, worker, and racer alike. For more on what the future holds, and how you can help, please read on.
Yours in the sport,
Frank Levinson

Endurance Racing Outlook
Pending a successful 2011 event, the WOR Board and this year's event organizers will discuss the viability of bringing another event onto our calendar. We will be closely watching, with many members attending and even participating in, the other endurance races in the Great Lakes Division, and also in our neighboring divisions to the East and South so that we can continue to gauge the potential for holding a future endurance event at Mid Ohio. Hearing from you, the competitors, workers, and stewards will also help shape the future for this type of event - so don't be shy when we see us at events, and feel free to contact us via e-mail.

The response to the aforementioned survey indicated that nearly 20 teams were strongly interested in participating at a Mid Ohio event, with another 15 teams interested but tentative in their commitment. While these numbers are encouraging, they are on the low end of what would be needed to have a successful event. Additionally, between the other endurance races on the calendar, such as those held at Nelson Ledges, New Jersey Motorsports Park, and Virginia International Raceway, we realize that adding another event to the calendar may unduly crowd the schedule. While these items pose significant challenges, they are not so large as to be overcome, especially if we know an event at Mid Ohio will be well attended.

Endurance racers are a tight knit group and many teams and individuals, spurred on by WOR's 2010 event and subsequent survey, have asked us what they can do to help us put on another enduro. Our response is predictably simple, "raise awareness and get teams to run the event!" In all seriousness, for the concept to work the endurance racing community needs to embrace it. So join us and help us spread the word! If you'd like to join our endurance racing email list, head over to wor-games.com and sign up to stay up to date on the latest news.

WOR Games 8-Hour Enduro Race Recap

Time will tell if the first Western Ohio Region “WOR Games” 8-Hour Enduro can be called a huge success. One thing is certain however, everyone who was at the track enjoyed themselves. Although the morning started a little chilly, the sun came out and everyone was soon enjoying sunny blue skies and temperatures in the 60’s.

The race started a bit differently because the grid positions were handed out based on time of paid entry with the pole position going to the earlybirds of High Street Racing. At the green flag the racers quickly reshuffled the order and the fun began. The first hour proved that the Honda America Race Team 1 (HART1) Honda Accord with Michael Galati driving was the car to beat. At the end of the first hour the HART1 team had the most laps (34) and had set the fast time of the day (1:38.9.) They were followed by High Street Racing’s Acura Integra Type R and the Colletti Motorsports RSX Type S with Car and Driver editor Tony Snow at the wheel. Problems surfaced during the first hour of racing as the HART2 Honda Civic developed a misfire, as did the SRT-4 of Doyle Racing. The Toyota Supra of JP Racing broke a front hub and temporarily retired to the paddock for repairs.

In hour two, with 54 laps completed, the HART2 Honda Civic had to retire. Shortly thereafter, with 60 laps in the books, the HART1 Honda Accord also retired from the race. Team leader John Schmidt attributed both failures to water contaminated fuel. The SRT-4 was suffering from a fuel starvation problem due to a faulty fuel cell, but was able to cross the finish line under its own power. Good sportsmanship was on display as all the other competitors were cheering for the SRT. After driving all over the Columbus area to find a replacement hub, the JP Racing Toyota Supra was able to reenter the race in hour 5. Great job guys! The Colletti Motorsports RSX had power steering problems in hour three which cost them five laps to repair. This gave the lead to the High Street Integra and suddenly it became a three horse race between the Integra, the Spec Racer Ford of Crowned Eagle Racing, and the Colletti RSX. At the finish it was the High Street Integra with 226 laps, the Crowned Eagle SRF with 224 laps, and the Colletti RSX with 223 laps.

The two Miatas in the race proved to be trouble free. Waterford’s Greatest Miata completed 205 laps and finished fourth overall, while the Miata of MW Motorsports completed 198 laps. Rounding out the field in sixth was the Colletti Motorsports Integra, which suffered from a broken hub in hour 6 with rising star Greg Vandersluis at the wheel. Vandersluis was able to nurse the car back to the pits without further damage to the front end which enabled the crew to have the car back on track after losing only 10 laps.

Awards were presented to seven “First in Class” winners at the Saturday evening pizza party. The many volunteers that made the Enduro a success were treated to a drawing for gift cards made possible by driver donations. Frank Levinson, WOR Regional Executive, asked “Should we do this next year?” There appeared to be unanimous consent.

Congrats to WOR racers at the Runoffs

Four racers from WOR made the journey to the Runoffs at Road America this year. The first race on Friday morning was the Touring 3 group (combined with STU). On a cold track at 0830 Frank Levinson fought his way through a gaggle of STU traffic to finish 8th in class. The last race before lunch was the Spec Miatas. Jim Suhr started 55 out of 60, kept his nose clean during a hairy crash at the kink (ask to see his in-car video) and finished 39th. After lunch the father/son team of Fred and Jason Albright took the track in the E Production race. Out of 28 starters, Jason went from 17th to 10th at the finish, while Fred went from 28 to 21st. With all the outstanding competitors from around the country, and with the possibility of crashes and equipment failure to spoil any racer's day, it is no small accomplishment that these racers were able to improve their positions and finish these intense 52 mile races. Congratulations to all our racers for a season well fought.

As some of you may know a Task Force was recently created to study the SCCA racing program and the RunOffs with everything, good or bad, on the table for discussion. One of the items was the thought of making IT a national class. This was to be discussed at the upcoming fact to face, but the idea has been openly discussed with drivers at one race this spring, and so I am sending this to all of you for discimination and discussion. I personally am NOT in favor of this for a variety of reasons, cost, it ain't broke, don't fix it, and others.

A lively discussion is taking place on the IT forum. For those of you who don't frequent the IT forum (or haven't done so recently), you might want to look at this:

http://www.improvedtouring.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23946

I would like all my RE's in GreDiv to get the word out on this idea with comments back to myself or the BoD ASAP.

Best to all,

Larry Dent
