Notes from the Chief Instructor, Mr. Steve Demeter
No passing except in the designated passing zones. In this case, the front and back straights are the only designated passing zones. The pass must be completed prior to entering Turn 1 or Turn 6.
No passing without a point by from the driver being passed.
When being passed: Hold your line. The passing driver will drive around you. Normal passing protocol is to pass on track left, as it is easier for drivers to clearly point a car by. Due to power differentials, you may need to lift off the accelerator in order to allow a passing car to get by safely.
No contact or close racing whatsoever will be permitted. The main goal of this event is to get everyone on the track, have fun, and finish the event with their cars in one piece.
Keep all 4 wheels on the pavement. Any 4 wheel off will be reported to the events safety steward by the instructor or corner working staff.
Obey all flags or signals from workers without question. They can see what you may not be able to.
The black flag means proceed slowly to the black flag station in the pits (usually right across from the start finish line) for consultation with the stewards.
If you spin or leave the track, do not move until instructed by a worker or your instructor.
Sage Advice
Make sure there is sufficient fuel in the car to last the entire session before going out on the track.
In a spin, Both Feet In.
Both hands on the wheel except when actually changing gears. Do not rest your right hand on the lever between shifts. You will have much better control of your car.
Situational Awareness. Be aware of what is happening around you. Don’t get trapped into tunnel vision, keep your head moving around, check your mirrors and look for corner stations and workers.
Early apexing is the single most common error made by new drivers. Do this and you run out of road and have to lift exiting the corner. Listen to your instructor and be aware of how the track flows.
Some Track Pointers
Turn 1 should be apexed around the end of the pit exit curbing. The radius opens up as you go around it.
Exiting turn 2 try to be no wider than the middle of the road so you do not have to pinch the car to make turn 3.
You can brake deep into the keyhole, the entrance is steeply uphill. But don’t go charging in so deep that you do not have the car well under control in order to set up for the best and fastest possible exit onto the back straight.
Apex the kink.
Exit turn 6 no wider than the middle of the track. If you go all the way to the left, you will not be able to get back to the right for turn 7.
Have all your turning for turn 7 done prior to the top of the hill. When you crest the hill, the car will get very light and not turn, anticipate oversteer here.
Watch the exit of turn 11. The road drops out from under you and it is easy to get the power on too hard and spin.
Have all of your braking done before cresting the top of the hill on entry to the carrousel. After the top of the hill, the car will get light and you want to get the best possible entry and exit from the carrousel as it sets you up for the entire front straight, turn 1 and all the way to turn 3.
